3. Findings
3.1
Results of interview with Mrs Khafu
3.1.1 Mr Kgomu the psychologist claimed that peer pressure
is the most common problem for student
3.1.2
He
further added that it was the university responsibility to add a psychologist
module for every course.
3.1.3
Mr
Kgomu admitted that the lectures who are lecturing at Doornfontein campus are
not well trained to deal with student who are facing peer pressure, estaff who worked in the canteens
were often
rude and dismissive of students, however, the
owner of
the canteen, Mr Frank Popadopolis, had committed to
sending
staff on customer care training courses
in 2016.
3.2. Results of questionnaires issued to
20 students
3.2.1 35% of the students claimed that peer
pressure is mostly caused by students who try to resemble their friends at
varsity
3.2.2
25%
of the students claimed that peer pressure is created by the system of the
university by allowing legal drugs to be sold around the campus.
3.2.3
40%
of the students said that Doornfontein campus does not have sufficient sport
facilities that is the reason why many student are challenged by negative peer
pressure.
3.3. Results of personal observation
3.3.1
There
are only few students who faces negative peer pressure because based on the
conducted research, the number of students who were negatively affected by peer
pressure are less than of those positive peer pressure.
3.3.2
There
is no multi-purpose centre at Doornfontein campus and its surroundings, thus
students spend most of their free time watching other students doing all sorts
of bad behaviours.
3.3.3
Student who often fail find it easy to be
influenced by negative peer pressure because they are normally under a lot of
pressure and are always looking for something to help them to cope.
4. Conclusions
4.1.1
Peer
pressure is mostly caused by students always trying hard to “fit in” in the
society. They try so hard so hard to fit in society and end up compromising their
values and believe in the process.
4.1.2 Most learners give in to peer pressure because they
are curious. They feel the need to try something new, such as smoking, drinking
and doing drugs to list a few.
4.1.2
Peer
pressure is also caused by poor performances in academics. Students with poor
academic records find themselves giving in to peer pressure because of stress.
5. Recommendations
It is recommended that:
5.1 Student must be able to choose
their friends well. They should choose friends that are of good behaviour,
confident with themselves and who motivates them to achieving great things.
5.2 Students must have high self- esteem. When students have
a high self- esteem, they are less likely to be swallowed by peer pressure.
5.3 Students should engage
themselves in sports and other extra curriculum activities to keep their minds
active. This will prevent them from being bored and end up doing being consumed
by peer pressure.
5. 4
Students should learn to say NO. Learners must learn not to go where the
wind blows and stand for what they believe is right.
